You know you’re diving into a typical holiday romantic comedy when you hear classic tunes like ‘It’s the Most Wonderful Time…’ or ‘Jingle Bells’ blaring in the background. “Meet Me Next Christmas” follows Layla (Christina Milian), who finds herself stuck at an airport on Christmas Eve due to a snowstorm. While waiting, she meets two men, one of whom sparks an instant connection. James (Kofi Siriboe) proposes they reunite next Christmas Eve at a Pentatonix concert if they’re both still single, setting the stage for a predictable holiday romance. Directed by Rusty Cundieff, the film features a cast that includes Christina Milian, Devale Ellis, and Kofi Siriboe, among others. It holds a rating of 2.5 and is available for streaming on Netflix.
The first thirty minutes flow smoothly, like pieces of a puzzle fitting together, until Layla meets the other man, Teddy (Devale Ellis), who serves as her helpful concierge. The film embraces its cheesy moments, not taking itself too seriously. Layla’s wholesome job helping students attend historically Black colleges makes her seem almost too good to be true—she would definitely top Santa’s nice list. While director Rusty Cundieff and writers Molly Haldeman and Camilla Rubis recognize the genre’s limitations, they keep the story within familiar boundaries, occasionally attempting to break free. However, the film ultimately relies on convenient storytelling, leaving viewers with a sense of déjà vu rather than surprise.
